Trenchless vs. Traditional Sewer Repair: How Orange County Homeowners Can Decide

Disclaimer: this is general information, not engineering advice. The right method depends on a camera inspection and a site visit by a licensed contractor.

Once a camera inspection shows your sewer lateral needs more than a cleaning, the question becomes how to fix it. There are three main approaches, and each fits different situations.

Pipe lining (CIPP)

A resin-soaked liner is pulled or inverted into the old pipe and cured in place, creating a new jointless pipe inside the old one. Fits: cracked or root-damaged clay and cast iron that still holds its shape. Limits: it cannot correct a belly (a sag), it slightly reduces the inside diameter, and branch connections must be reopened carefully. Pipe lining companies.

Pipe bursting

A bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, splitting it outward while dragging a new HDPE pipe in behind it. Fits: pipe that is too damaged to line, or where you want a brand-new pipe along the same path. Limits: needs access pits at both ends and room around the pipe; nearby utilities and tight bends can rule it out. Pipe bursting companies.

Open-trench replacement

The traditional method: dig along the line, remove the old pipe and lay new PVC or ABS. Fits: collapsed lines, deep bellies, rerouting, and short runs under soil. Limits: surface restoration of concrete, pavers and landscaping can cost as much as the plumbing. Sewer line replacement companies.
